    Negotiating daughterhood and strangerhood: retrospective accounts of serial migration

    Most considerations of daughtering and mothering take for granted that the subjectivities of mothers and daughters are negotiated in contexts of physical proximity throughout daughters’ childhoods. Yet many mothers and daughters spend periods separated from each other, sometimes across national borders. Globally, an increasing number of children experience life in transnational families. This paper examines the retrospective narratives of four women who were serial migrants as children (whose parents migrated before they did) . It focuses on their accounts of the reunion with their mothers and how these fit with the ways in which they construct their mother-daughter relationships. We take a psychosocial approach by using a psychoanalytically-informed reading of these narratives to acknowledge the complexities of the attachments produced in the context of migration and to attend to the multi-layered psychodynamics of the resulting relationships. The paper argues that serial migration positioned many of the daughters in a conflictual emotional landscape from which they had to negotiate ‘strangerhood’ in the context of sadness at leaving people to whom they were attached in order to join their mothers (or parents). As a result, many were resistant to being positioned as daughters, doing daughtering and being mothered in their new homes

    Implications of teacher life-work histories for conceptualisations of ‘care’: narratives from rural Zimbabwe

    Schools are increasingly seen as key sites for support to HIV-affected and other vulnerable children, and teachers are assigned the critical role of identifying and providing psychosocial support. Drawing on the life-work history narratives of twelve teachers in Zimbabwe, this paper explores the psychosocial processes underpinning teachers’ conceptualisations of these caring roles. The influence of prolonged adversity, formative relationships, and broader patterns of social and institutional change in teacher identity formation processes speak to the complex and embodied nature of understandings of ‘care’. In such extreme settings teachers prioritise the material and disciplinary aspects of ‘care’ that they see as essential for supporting children to overcome hardship. This focus not only means that emotional support as envisaged in international policy is commonly overlooked, but also exposes a wider ideological clash about childrearing. This tension together with an overall ambivalence surrounding teacher identities puts further strain on teacher-student relationships. We propose the current trainings on providing emotional support are insufficient and that more active focus needs to be directed at support to teachers in relation with their students

    ‘Berrypicking’ in the formation of ideas about problem drinking amongst users of alcohol online support groups

    Beliefs held by individuals about the illnesses or problems that affect them have been shown to impact upon the health and other outcomes that they achieve. Online support groups (OSGs) are one source of information used by those with health problems which may influence or determine what they think about their particular issue and how to resolve it. Problem drinking remains a major source of significant costs to society. This article explores whether the discussion forums of alcohol OSGs that do not follow the 12-step philosophy of Alcoholics Anonymous influence the formation of these beliefs, reporting on the outcome of thematic analysis of interviews with 25 users from five groups. It argues that Bates’ ‘Berrypicking’ model of information searching is helpful in illuminating group members’ information seeking activities. It looks at the four key aspects of berrypicking identified by Bates – the nature of the search query, the information ‘domains’ drawn on, the information retrieved and the search techniques used. The study finds that users are typically berrypickers, selecting information from different sources and forming their own interpretations

    Political apologies and the question of a ‘shared time’ in the Australian context

    Although conceptually distinct, ‘ time ’ and ‘community’ are multiply intertwined within a myriad of key debates in both the social sciences and the humanities. Even so, the role of conceptions of time in social practices of inclusion and exclusion has yet to achieve the prominence of other key analytical categories such as identity and space. This article seeks to contribute to the development of this field by highlighting the importance of thinking time and community together through the lens of political apologies. Often ostensibly offered in order to re-articulate both the constitution of ‘the community’ and its future direction, official apologies are prime examples of deliberate attempts to intervene in shared understandings of political community and its temporality. Offering a detailed case study of one of these apologies, I will focus on Australian debates over the removal of indigenous children from their families, known as the Stolen Generations, and examine the temporal dimensions of the different responses offered by former prime ministers John Howard and Kevin Rudd

    Effects of noise from four types of extractive energy infrastructure on song features in Savannah Sparrows (Passerculus sandwichensis)

    Human activities change the acoustic environment in many setting around the world. These changes are complex, as different anthropogenic sound sources create different acoustic profiles; therefore, some sound sources may have greater impacts on wildlife than others. Animals may adapt to these altered acoustic environments by adjusting their vocalizations. In the case of bird song, this may be achieved by adjusting the whole song, which may preserve the spectral and temporal relationships between successive syllables, or adjusting components (syllables) within the song. Determining which syllables are adjusted may help elucidate the mechanisms, benefits, and limitations to song plasticity. We examined effects of conventional industrial infrastructure used to extract shallow natural gas and petroleum (natural gas compressor stations, generator-powered oil well pumpjacks, power grid-powered oil well screw pumps, and generator-powered oil well screw pumps), compared with quiet control sites, on 15 variables describing the acoustic properties of whole songs and syllables in Savannah Sparrows (Passerculus sandwichensis). Changes in acoustic properties varied with syllable and infrastructure type: most effects occurred at generator-powered screw pump sites, the loudest type of infrastructure that we studied. We found no effects of infrastructure on whole song variables, but song minimum frequency increased with ambient background noise. We found differing effects of infrastructure types on individual syllable types, with alterations in frequencies, tonality and syllable duration. This suggests that some syllables may be more plastic in their response than others, which may allow Savannah Sparrows to adapt their communication in altered acoustic environments
